The waters from this massif, in the zone of Sibiu, form a series of waterfalls: Moasei Waterfall, Avrigului Waterfall, Serbotei Waterfall, Balea Waterfall. Access to the Balea Lake is made easier by the road passing through Fagaras Mountains, named “transfagarasan” and asphalted completely. The Fagaras Massif is constituted from a main ridge with East-West direction and in winter accessible only from Sibiu to Balea Waterfall and from there to Balea Lake by telecabin. Balea Lake is situated near Curtisoarei Valley, at 2034 m altitude, with 360m length and 11m depth. It is the most beautiful and largest lake in Romania. Arround of the lake, 100ha ground was declared a scientific reservation with numerous plants (corner flower, yellow poppy etc.) and protected animals (ex. black goat). Near the lake a few chalets are found and in January 2006 will open an ice hotel (unique in Romania). Balea Lake’s area is known for hiking in these marvellous mountains. The delightful surroundings offer the possibility of some very different entertainment activities. In the winter time exist skiing possibilities on numerous natural pistes, which surround the chalet “Balea Lake”. The telecabin, which makes the connection with Balea Waterfalls (1234 m), creates the possibility to descend on a 10 km route, with 600 m level difference. On the frozen surface of the lake (over 4 km) is arranged frozen glossed areas for hokey, curling and iceskating. In summer, on the lake nautical sports like boating are popular.
